Trainin Program in Trauma and Organ Injury

The National Institute of Health has awarded the department of Surgery at Pennsylvania State Hershey Medical Center a “training Program in Trauma and Organ Injury.”

This grant is an intensive two-year period of research training focused on the mechanisms responsible for the cellular dysfunction and multi organ failure associated with injury. The training will provide individuals with an in depth knowledge base and intensive laboratory experience that will facilitate successful, productive careers in independent academic trauma research. A structured training environment is provided that allows for coursework, mentoring and the possibility of obtaining a Master’s degree. The deadline for applications is June 15 th, 2007.

The training program has been designed principally to provide surgical residents research opportunities in the area of trauma and organ injury biology. However, the program does not exclude qualified candidates from other disciplines such as M.D.s in other specialties and Ph.D.s in the basic health sciences. Only candidates with a strong desire for a career in academic trauma research should apply.

They are encouraged to submit a detailed curriculum vita, three letters of recommendation and a personal statement detailing their career objectives.

Candidates must provide evidence that they will be accepted back into that program upon completion of the trauma training program. The training program will begin on July 1, 2008.

Wanted – A Few Good Advisors!

The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECGFMG) is seeking the participation of qualified physicians in the implementation of a new resource for International Medical Graduates.

The IMG Advisors Network (IAN) allows IMGs who are applying for J-1 Exchange Visitor Program visas to communicate directly with IMGs who have successfully entered or completed GME training in the U.S. These individuals will all have achieved ECFMG certification and been offered positions in accredited Graduate Medical Education programs in the U.S.

Advisors are invited to serve on a voluntary basis and will be listed in the IAN on-line database by name, medical specialty, U.S. GME program, location in the U.S., country of origin, medical school and other demographics. Qualifying U.S. bound IMGs registered with the IAN program and seeking advice, can log on to the ECFMG website and search the IAN database to find individuals who would be most likely to be helpful in providing information and advice about relocating to the U.S, and related practical advice.

Ideally matched advisors might be in the actual program to which the new IMG is coming and might even be from their own country or medical school but even less specifically matched advisors could be of great help. IMG E-mail addresses will be provided to the advisor who can then begin communicating directly with the advisee.

The first phase of implementation of this new resource, beginning right now, is to actively recruit qualified advisors in order to build a database of IMGs in or having completed GME training in the U.S.

If YOU are an IMG physician in or having completed training in a U.S. residency or fellowship program, and would like to learn more about how you can help newly arriving IMGs more smoothly transition into and become comfortable with living and working in the U.S. by serving as an advisor in the ECFMG IMG Advisor Network, please click on or go to http://www.ecfmg.org/acculturation/ian.html.
