Scholarship

Overview

  • Program name: Learner/Trainee Scholarship Program

  • Established: 2005

  • Purpose: Support learners and trainees of Arab heritage pursuing educational opportunities in the healthcare field

  • Scholarship amount: Up to $2,500 per recipient

  • Funding cycle: Number of scholarships varies each fiscal year based on available funds; applications accepted during an open window and reviewed on a rolling basis until funds are exhausted

  • Review: Applications reviewed by the Scholarship Committee to determine eligibility and funding recommendations

Scholarship Categories

  1. Houston Scholarship

    • Purpose: Support electives or rotations at healthcare institutions, facilities, or clinics within the Houston metro area

    • Eligible uses (at the Scholarship Committee’s discretion): Lodging, insurance, elective-related expenses, travel for the elective period, or examination fees

    • Minimum duration: Rotation/elective must be at least one month

  2. Home Country Scholarship

    • Purpose: Support learners in their home country

    • Eligible uses: Tuition, lodging, or attendance at a health-related conference (applicants must agree to present at the conference)

General Eligibility

Applicant must be of Arab heritage.

Application Notes

  • Please review the qualification criteria carefully before submitting an inquiry.

  • Applications are accepted during the open application window and reviewed on a rolling basis until allocated funds are exhausted.

  • If desired, application deadlines, required documents, or submission instructions can be added.

Eligible Applicants

  • Learners in medicine (MD or DO), dentistry, physician assistant programs, nursing, pharmacy, social work, psychology (master’s level), public health, or any other healthcare-related field may apply.

  • Applicants who have not yet received their degree and those who received their degree within the prior 3 years are eligible.

  • Full-time enrollment in an internationally recognized healthcare professional school is required. (For home country scholarships, the school must be in an Arab country.)

  • Undergraduates in a healthcare-related field are eligible only if they are members of their local NextGen chapter.

Houston-Specific Requirements (applicable only to the Houston scholarships)

  • Accepted applicants must plan to spend at least one month (or more) on an elective rotation at a Houston medical/health-related institution, facility, or clinic.

  • Commitment to attend NAAMA meetings during the training month(s) in Houston is required.

Required Application Materials

Each candidate must submit the following materials:

  • An up-to-date Curriculum Vitae.

  • A complete application form, including:

    • For Houston scholarships: an essay describing how the proposed training (elective) in Houston will advance the applicant’s future plans, and a brief budget justification.

    • For home country scholarships: an essay describing how the proposed training will advance the applicant’s future plans, and a demonstration of financial need.

  • A letter verifying current or recent enrollment in a healthcare-related institution or school.

  • A letter of acceptance for the proposed elective training from the accepting institution/facility (required for Houston scholarships).

  • Two letters of recommendation from current or previous supervisors:

    • For Houston scholarships: emphasize the suitability of the proposed rotation for the applicant’s career advancement.

    • For home country scholarships: emphasize the applicant’s academic standing.

    • Letters must be written within the last three months prior to the application date.

  • Endorsement by a current NAAMA member in the form of a simple written statement.

    • For home country scholarships, applicants are encouraged to reach out to the executive committee of the National Arab American Association–Houston Chapter.

  • If publications result from the rotation, the learner must include the National Arab American Association–Houston Chapter in the Acknowledgements section.

  • Post-rotation feedback: a concise essay highlighting the impact of the rotation and suggestions for improvement. An exit interview with a Scholarship Committee member may substitute for this essay if requested.

  • Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis during the open window until funds are allocated.

  • Ensure all required documents are provided to avoid delays.
